SU29

A little Gem

SU29 Boutique Hotel is home to 8  luxurious suites, uniquely designed to meet the perfect combination of classic charm with modern luxury. A total renovation of a 100 year old building located in the centre of Malta's capital City Valletta. The renovation has been spiced with a contemporary annex on the top floors by a well-appointed local architect and the sourcing of well know designer furniture pieces.

In harmony with its humble setting, the Fortress City of Valletta, and close to the water's edge of the working Grand Harbour, a stay at SU29 is an experience in itself. A boutique hotel that inspirationally captures the spirit of its surrounding natural wonders to host guests with a warm welcome in timeless luxury.

Valletta

Having Valletta's finest boutique hotel in such an iconic street. Valletta, Malta’s capital and a World Heritage site, is nothing short of an open-air museum. It is a living experience of Baroque architecture, a monument donated by the Knights of St John nearly five centuries ago. Throughout the years, Valletta has welcomed emperors, heads of state, artists and poets and is now the permanent seat of the Maltese government.

Valletta (or Il-Belt) is the tiny capital of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. The walled city was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order. It’s known for museums, palaces and grand churches. Baroque landmarks include St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose opulent interior is home to the Caravaggio masterpiece "The Beheading of Saint John."

Sightseeing

The Upper Barrakka Gardens

First built as a private garden for the Italian Knights in the 17th Century, this public garden offers a superb panorama of the Grand Harbour. Kiosk cafe and toilet block conveniently sited in the gardens.

Auberge de Castille

On Pjazza Kastilja, pause to admire the façade of the Auberge de Castille, designed by the architect Andrea Belli in 1741. It adorns a 16th-century building that was once the home of the Spanish and Portuguese langue of the Knights of St John, but now houses the offices of the Maltese prime minister (not open to the public).

The Grand Master’s Palace

The Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta is one of the largest and most opulent in Malta. This baroque palace built by the Knights of Malta with its beautiful architecture, internal courtyards, The Armoury, and its chambers lined with Gobelins Tapestries is a must visit sight.

Casa Rocca Piccola

This four centuries old palace on the lower stretch of Republic Street is still lived in by descendants of the Maltese noble family de Piro and is open to the public. It makes an interesting visit as it offers a glimpse into the life of a wealthy patrician family over the centuries. It is a gem of a private museum and has a fascinating costume collection as well.

Manoel Theatre

If theatre is at all your thing, try to catch an event at this jewel-box of an 18th century theatre, which is Europe’s third-oldest and is still very much in working order. The theatre is Malta’s National Theatre and home to nearly all performances held by the National Orchestra. There are a good many plays in English. Or, take a back stage tour. They are run most mornings except Sundays.

St. John’s Co-Cathedral

Built by the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John between 1573 and 1577, this church was designed by Girolamo Cassar, a Maltese architect known for designing many of the outstanding buildings in Valletta. Austere from the outside but impressive internally, this magnificent building houses, among other highlights, Caravaggio’s ‘The Beheading of John the Baptist’ – a monumental canvas and the only work the artist signed.
