Lake MalawiNkwichi Lodge is located in the north-western corner of Mozambique, on the eastern side of Lake Malawi (or Lake Niassa as it is called on this side). Close to the islands of Likoma and Chizumulu (belonging to Malawi), 15 km south of a small town named Cobué on the main land Mozambique is a small triangular point, known as Mala Point. The concession for Nkwichi Lodge stretches south from this point (485 m above sea level).
How to get there
Tucked away on the magical Mozambican shores of Lake Malawi, there are a variety of ways to reach the hidden paradise of Nkwichi. Free from roads, an Nkwichi boat team will bring you in the final stage of the journey. Through Malawi (arriving on Likoma Island, a small Malawian island next to the Mozambican coastline).
Through Mozambique (arriving at Cobue, a small village on the lake, where the road ends).
- Small charter plane from Lilongwe to Likoma island where Nkwichi’s boat will be waiting for you.. Experience a Fish Eagle’s eye view of the lake. Transfers take 50 mins and depart every day.
Please note: boat transfer depends on lake conditions and there is a risk of winds and rough weather from June – September.
- 4×4 transfer (or self-drive) from Lichinga to Cobue where Nkwichi’s boat will be waiting on the lake shore. The drive, which takes 4 hours, is one of Africa’s most scenic drives, taking in the Rift Valley escarpment and the coastline of the lake.
