Dar Kawa   /  Marrakesh travel info

Senses of Moroccan Lifestyle

Dar Kawa is situated in the heart of the Medina, old town, in the maze of souk. It has 1 cozy Double room, 2  striking Junior suites and 1 magnificent Suite.

Dar Kawa was built right in the beginning of the 17th century. At that time, the house was the zaouïa of Derkaoua, a religious building of the brotherhood of the same name. In the middle of these walls with Saadian architecture, one prayed, meditated, exchanged in total serenity. Dar Kawa has preserved its tranquillity and its revitalizing energy.

Acquired by Valérie Barkowski, the house was restored the first time in 1999 with the help and the reliable  advice of Quentin Wilbaux, a Belgian architect, a true connoisseur of the medina of Marrakech. The materials are chosen with simplicity and authenticity. Cedar is used for all woodwork, tiles are made of cement… everything corresponds to ancestral Moroccan culture. Sober colours have moreover been chosen to allow its proportions and its refinement to be expressed totally. Everything is thought of to play with the senses and the Moroccan lifestyle. The smell of orange trees, traditional and local food, home-made linen…a simple and delicious “slow life”.

Private Rental

Dar Kawa can also be rented just for your private stay, fully disconnected or not. A house for yourself , for your family and friends. A house that welcomes a special occasion or a professional meeting.

The Medina

Dar Kawa is situated in the heart of the Medina, old town, in the maze of souks… That is where the city of Marrakech was born. Between the spice market and Medersa Ben Youssef.

t punctuates life, it palpitates. The kitchen is central at Dar Kawa. And the table, symbolises flavours, sharing. It is to be said that Morocco is spoilt. In Morocco fruit and vegetables soaked in the sun are abundant. No need to go and look for them elsewhere…

Dar Kawa is essentially supplied with local products. And because one likes to live in harmony with nature, one follows the seasons… So much so that one is delighted to find a aubergine in April or a pomegranate in October. Everything is prepared in a simple way to discover the true and full flavours.

At breakfast, they make home-made bread. Sometimes they offer crêpes, pancakes,  bread puddings… depending on the inspiration of Saïda, their cook. They always have fresh orange juice, home-made jams, yoghurt, honey, fruit, eggs (on request).

The Patio

The patio, one passes it, one meets one another there, one lives there. It is the heart of Dar Kawa. You can eat there in total privacy or in company. You can sit there for morning, midday and evening meals at a low table, a table for two or a large table. It is up to you and what you wish to do…
And then, at every time of the day, one rests in the large settee flooded with cushions to read, have tea, discuss or even take a nap under the orange trees, the souls of this patio. In summer, one tastes the freshness of the place. In winter, the place is covered with tarpaulin which allows light to pass through. All year round, the patio remains the central living space of Dar Kawa.

The Terrace

A landing, a stair-case. The latter goes up to the Dar Kawa terrace, this place where one looks for shade as one looks for the sun. Partly covered, the terrace is a refuge for a daydream. You can lunch or diner there in summer, you can even take a shower and refresh yourself there when the sun gets too intense.

A lounge area and cots have been put up there in case you wish to rest. But, above all it is the Indian charpoi, this resting cot placed in another covered part of the terrace, which is most valuable during the afternoon hours.
