Pousada Picinguaba

Beauty and tranquililty

Pousada Picinguaba is one of the natural beauties of Casas na Terra. At Picinguaba, everything appears to be in perfect harmony. Here they keep things calm by having only 9 rooms and 1 master suite with bathtub and an incomparable view. Their rooms do not come with televisions, telephones or internet service, but instead have a private veranda for guests to connect to the ocean and forest from the gentle swing of a hammock. The rooms are intended for single or double occupancy but some can be equipped with an extra bed if desired.

- Casas na Terra - hospitality and much more

Casas na Terra are places of exceptional natural beauty and preserved culture that allow for profound experiences of reconnection. They are gathering places of people sharing a similar vision.

Casas na Terra is born of the awareness that we need to learn to see the world with a different perspective. As human beings, we have been following a path of separation, when in truth there is only a collective path of oneness, for everyone to realize his own true purpose in life. It is necessary to regenerate the world by regenerating ourselves, as what we see of the world is the mirror of what is inside us. For this, we need to come back home, to our essence.

"We are Nature. This is our big common home, our house. The house is the place that gathers, that nurtures the human family, where we care, and we are being cared for"

For years they have been creating opportunities for people to meet with the riches of Brazil – its exuberant nature, the beauty of its inhabitants, its culture of tolerance. Now, they are uniting their actions and intentions into a unique large home: Casas na Terra. They are inspiring themselves from Nature to write their own story. The bees work together to preserve the life in the hive and spread the energy of fertility through the Earth. From what they teach us, they understand our deep values: love and action. It is time to go from intention to action. They want to radiate our purpose to re-signify what life is really about and act to unite people who, like us, are looking to walk ahead, sharing and acting together in harmony. Casas na Terra aren’t just places, they are laboratories of change. A journey to our inner center.

The people who are the original heritage of the place

The guardians are the people — people who were born here or who made this place home. At the fishermen’s village, all embrace the riches kept by the Brazilian earth and sea. Guardians are those who cherish the desire to settle here, to protect and preserve the the traditions of simple living and warm welcomes. You will meet them, Oséias, Luciana, Tomas, Félix, Tartaruga, Fabíola, Tati, Maycon and Cirilo.

Atlantic Forest Natural Park

Picinguaba is located on the only part of the Serra do Mar State Park that reaches the beach. It is a magical place between the Atlantic Forest and the ocean.

In tupi-guarani, Picinguaba means “fish shelter” (“refúgio dos peixes”). Pousada Picinguaba is located in a tranquil bay at the heart of the Atlantic Forest Natural Park – a tropical seaside forest that extends from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo – within a small fisherman’s village in the Ubatuba region and a half hour away from Paraty. To the eyes, Picinguaba emerges as an entryway to a Brazil of decades past.

How to get there

Picinguaba is located 30 miles from Paraty, half-way between Rio and São Paulo. There is no direct car access to the hotel, which is a 5 minute's walk up the hills from the beach.

Experience the Picinguaba way of life..

Sea and Forest

Time flows softly at Picinguaba. Despite this, it will still seem as though there is not enough time to take in everything the fishermen’s village and its surrounding region has to offer. Boats, kayaks and stand-up paddles take you to deserted beaches; walks through the forest teach you about the calls of birds that echo in the green and reveal landscapes and waterfalls. Native dwellers invite you to fish scallops and taste the entire potency of their flavor. Trips to neighboring towns such as Paraty teach you more about culture, history and everything they define as richness.

Living in the sea

Floating in the sea, admiring the coast from a different angle, feeling the energy of nature — this may be the best definition of peace. At Picinguaba guests can experience this feeling in many different ways, be it through surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking or on a schooner ride.

Native fishing

Experience the Picinguaba way of life. The village is an internationally recognized UNESCO heritage site. Fish with a local fisherman, from one of the colorful boats docked out on the bay. This activity is great fun for both children and adults — a relaxing, educational experience that connect you with the knowledge of people who embrace fishing as a traditional practice. Upon your return, they can cook up what you’ve fished for dinner, a special experience in and of itself.

Forest Hikes

Entering the forest and following trails through essentially untouched greenery, breathing in fresh air, hearing the echoes bouncing off the trees. At Picinguaba they offer various itineraries that take guests to secret beaches, only accessible on foot, to spectacular waterfalls or even on a birdwatching tour led by a local and passionate guide.

Cultural Immersions

Picinguaba is a small village located inside Ubatuba. It is also an internationally recognized UNESCO heritage site. Amongst the many cultural experiences that are to be had here, they also offer three guided tours: Vila de Picinguaba, Paraty and Trilha de Ouro (Gold Trail). The “Paraty, Colonial Heritage” tour takes you to a city rich in culture, outfitted in XVII and XVIII century buildings, arts and crafts shops, as well as restaurants featuring local gastronomy.

Sunset on the beach

Watching the sunset on the beach is a beautiful Picinguaba moment. They can arrange a boat trip to admire its spectacle of color from several secluded beaches in the area. Feel the serenity of being alone in a beautiful place, watch colors take over the sky and breathe in tranquility.

Traditional canoeing in the mangrove

The traditional caiçara canoe is a symbol of the relationship between the people of Picinguaba and the sea. They are the traditional means of reaching the ocean for artisanal fishing. Made of wood and colorfully painted, the canoes color the village’s ocean. To go on a caiçara canoe trip through the mangrove means encountering a place that is the natural filter between sweet and salt water, discovering its unique vegetation, fauna and richness — an enchanting experience.

Eat & Dine

From the nets of the local fishermen to your table

Fish still salty from the sea are only a short walk away from Tati’s kitchen. Every year and season comes with its own offerings: anchovies, baquara and carapeva; sororoca in the winter, mas pargo, vermelho, robalo (snook) and garopa year-round. They are grilled, baked, and boiled. Seu Cirilo, a Picinguaba resident, keeps the farm overflowing with bananas, cacao, manioc root, cambuci, hearts of palm and whatever else pops up in the backyard. Fresh organic vegetables and fruits are brought from Fazenda Catuçaba. Neighborhood fishermen, who are friends of the Pousada, bring Picinguaba’s famous fresh scallops, and sometimes even stick around to open them for guests.
