Gregans Castle

The Lord of the Rings..

This stunning 18th century manor house is set in its own established and lovingly-attended gardens, and has spectacular views that stretch across the Burren to Galway Bay. Inside, you’ll find welcoming open fires, candlelight and striking decoration ranging from modern art, to antique furniture, to pretty garden flowers adorning the rooms.

Gregans Castle has long been a source of inspiration for its visitors. Guests have included J.R.R Tolkien, who’s said to have been influenced by the Burren when writing The Lord of the Rings, as well as other revered artists and writers like C.S. Lewis and Seamus Heaney.

And for the guests of today: with warm Irish hospitality, stylish accommodation, outstanding service and exceptional fine dining in our award-winning restaurant, they truly are a country house of the 21st century. You can do nothing or everything there. And whatever you choose, they’d like you to join them in celebrating all that is wondrous and beautiful in that truly exceptional place.

What the rooms don’t have, are televisions. They have learnt that their guests want to focus on what is there, rather than what isn’t!

Everyone is welcome at Gregans Castle Hotel, children included. A selection of rooms are suitable for families and some open onto their own garden area, which is perfect for little explorers. Being so popular, they do recommend booking the family rooms in advance, but if you’re too late they will allocate you suitable rooms next to each other, when availability allows.

A tea at Father Teds's house..

There’s so much to see and do around Gregans Castle Hotel. You could visit some of the area’s many renowned attractions like the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher and Aillwee Cave. Or how about jigging to some traditional Irish music in the picturesque villages of Doolin and Kilfenora? You can even have tea at Father Ted's house!
If you’re looking for some activity and excitement, we can arrange horse-riding, golf, cycling, sea kayaking, rock climbing or half or full day walking excursions with a knowledgeable walking guide.

Guided Walking and Cycling Tours

Many visitors come to enjoy the Burren on foot or by bike – the quiet lanes are ideal for cycling and there are many walking trails too. There are bicycles for guests to use at the hotel and and they organise local guided cycling tours. Most of the staff have local knowledge of good walking trails and can suggest many interesting alternative walks for you to try. Or, if you’d like to be shown around in person, a knowledgeable walking guide is available for full or half day excursions.
If you’d like a guided walk please let them know before your stay so they can arrange a booking for you.

The Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands

Standing at 250 m, the Cliffs of Moher are some of the most dramatic cliffs in Europe. The area is home to many different species of wildlife including birds, dolphins and the occasional whale. The cliff-side walks have stunning views towards the Aran Islands and Conemara. Cliffs of Moher Cruises offer daily one-hour boat trips under the cliffs from Doolin and Liscannor piers. On your way back to the hotel, take the scenic coastal road to Ballyvaughan via Black Head.

The Aran Islands are located off the coast of the Burren and are well known for their traditional way of life – islanders still speak Gaelge as their first tongue – as well as their cultural and literary history. Doolin Ferries and Cliffs of Moher Cruises both operate a passenger ferry service to The Aran Islands from Doolin (10 miles from the hotel) between April and October.
This is a full day’s activity with boats returning around 5pm.

Tea at Father Ted's House

It’s a little known fact that the Father Ted series was filmed in the Burren. Parochial House, Craggy Island was the house used for the series and is privately owned by Sheryl and Pat McCormack. Their family is delighted to give the public the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea in their kitchen, complete with delicious home baking and stories of Father Ted. There's also a guided tour of the farm with its rich ancient heritage and traditions.
Booking is essential so please contact us for details.
